Carnival DVD Popular In Uganda
June 2008
Bridgwater has had a visitor from Uganda, Sam Kiggundu on his first visit to this country. Sam (32) who is married with one child lives just outside Kampala and runs his own Media Studio helping youngsters in Uganda to learn media skills.
Sam explained he had got interested in media and had learnt his skills at an early age, he now wanted to pass these skills on to others. Many young Ugandans never finish school so with media skills it allows them to earn money to help their families.
Sam has been working with Geoff Sherring of MovingArt to try and set up some sort of exchange scheme which would allow young Ugandans to visit this country for media training and have been talking with Ravensbourne College in London to try and facilitate this.
Geoff who films the Somerset Carnivals with Grapevine visited Uganda a couple of years ago and took a copy of the Bridgwater Carnival DVD with an intro provided by our then President Chris Hocking with him; which has been shown on Ugandan television. Sam said it had been very popular, bearing in mind that many villages in Uganda have very few if any electric lights.
Sam was presented with a DVD of the 2007 Bridgwater Carnival procession which again will be shown on Ugandan television, Sam hopes to return and help Geoff with the filming of the Carnival within the next two years.
The picture above shows carnival secretary Dave Croker presenting the DVD to Sam with Geoff Sherring looking on.
Geoff is trying to obtain equipment to assist Sam with his training project as the equipment in Uganda is very limited, so if anyone has an old digital camera/video camera sitting in the cupboard that still works and would like to donate it please contact Geoff Sherring on 01278 450496 who will ensure it gets to Uganda.
