Bridgwater Carnival’s origins lie in the failed exploits of Guy Fawkes, and in this, the 417 th  anniversary of these Gunpowder Plot celebrations, Bridgwater Carnival 2022 is set to illuminate the town’s streets for the first time since 2019 and the pandemic. This year’s carnival celebrations are testament to the town’s dedicated carnivalites and the invaluable support received from Arts Council England, the event’s main sponsor EDF’s Hinkley Point C, and many other local businesses and organisations. On carnival day itself, the build up to the grand procession starts in the town centre at 10:30am, and carnival revellers will scarcely have time to pause for breath. This is a night when everyone can forget all of their troubles for a few hours, marvel at the incredible sights, and get carried away by the infectious atmosphere. “I am sure everyone will have a great night at the carnival in Bridgwater, the home of carnival. Parking Once again organisers of Bridgwater Carnival have teamed up with The Buses of Somerset to provide a park and ride service for spectators attending this year’s carnival. This year there are two park and ride services:  Junction 24, M5, Market Way, North Petherton. TA6 6DF (blue) – opens at 2pm, and drop off/pick up at Taunton Road (outgoing) just past the garage. Hours Of Operation: 2pm to 6pm, and 9pm to 11:30pm.  Hinkley Point C, Bristol Road, Dunball, TA6 4TB. (yellow)  – opens at 2pm, and drop off/pick up at East Quay/Watsons Lane. Hours of operation: 2pm to 6pm, and 9pm to 11:30pm. Charges will be £12 per car (£20 for camper vans and mini buses), and this will include the return bus trip for all the vehicles passengers. Official car parks close to the procession route will be clearly signposted, and are located at the following locations: St Matthew’s Field, Morrisons Supermarket, ASDA Supermarket, Bridgwater Hospital, Wickes, Morganians Rugby Club, B&M Store, Polden Bower School, and West Quay Car Park. These car parks will be staffed by representatives from charities and community organisations authorised by Bridgwater Guy Fawkes, and parking will cost £6 per vehicle. All official carnival car parks close at midnight. Live Stream For those who are unable to make it into Bridgwater on the big night, the carnival is also being streamed live. This is thanks to the technical expertise of Somerset Web Services, Maniac Films, QSS IT and Timeless Images. The live stream will officially begin at 6pm and will feature the carnival procession and squibbing display. [YM Carnival Club (Folded 2023)](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/ymca-carnival-club/): YMCA Carnival club was formed in 1968, and is based at the town's YMCA headquarters and socially at the Blake Hall. The first year the club entered as a walking comic feature with props built on an old car chassis lit by car batteries. - [Griffens Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/griffens-carnival-club/): Griffens Carnival Club was formed in 1968 by a group of employees from the shoe factory 'C&J Clark Ltd', which was based at Redgate Street, Bridgwater. - [Pentathlon Carnival Club (Associate)](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/pentathlon-carnival-club-associate/): Pentathlon Carnival Club was formed in 1971, and it's first ever entry Verdi's Grand Opera Aida took first place at Bridgwater Carnival in the open tableaux class. This was an amazing achievement for a new club, and it would be easier to state the years in which the club didn't win, such has been the  impact the club has had on the top prizes over the years. - [Toppers Carnival Club (Associate)](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/toppers-carnival-club-associate/): Toppers Carnival Club was formed in 1994 after a number of members from Young Dragons CC decided to break away and form a new juvenile carnival club. The club's first ever entry into Bridgwater Carnival was that same year with Alice in Wonderland. - [Wilfs Carnival Club (Associate)](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/wilfs-carnival-club-associate/): The Wilfs Carnival Club was formed in early 1989. Their name was chosen as its means in local vocabulary – ‘likeable people who enjoy life with a serious edge’. - [Newmarket Carnival Club (Associate)](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/newmarket-carnival-club-associate/): Newmarket Carnival Club was formed in 1976 when Geoff and Marion Paisey took over The Newmarket Hotel in Bath Road, and as well as Geoff, the other founder members were Kieron Howes, Adrian Jones, John Moate and Dave Hill. - [Marina Sydenham Juvenile Carnival Club (Associate)](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/marina-sydenham-juvenile-carnival-club-associate/): Bridgwater based Marina Sydenham Juvenile Carnival Club (JCC), was founded in 1966 as Marina Row Carnival Club by Roy Pearce and his son Kevin. The carnival club taking its name from the road where most of the members lived in the town. The club started with just a small trailer and go-cart entry, and won it’s first prize in 1971 after being placed 3rd with an entry entitled Chichester Returns. - [Marketeers Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/marketeers-carnival-club/): Founded in 1960 as the Sydenham Club, the club changed headquarters several times before a move in 1973 to The Market House (latterly The Valiant Soldier Pub and Remedies Bar) saw the club adopt the name The Marketeers Carnival Club. - [Renegades Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/renegades-carnival-club/): Life began in 1966 for the Renegades Carnival Club (initially called Wellworthy CC). Roger Evans, David Elson, Jim Bartlett, Albert Ford and a few others, got together and discussed forming a carnival club.  With the exception of Roger Evans, they all worked at the Wellworthy piston manufacturing plant in Bridgwater. The company agreed that the newly formed club could use its large car parking area as a site on which the club could build its cart. During the autumn of 1966, the members met at the King William Inn, popularly known as the King Billy. It was too late to enter the 1966 carnival but in plenty of time to start the fund raising for the following year. A weekly raffle held within the factory was organised and once a week Albert Ford sat in a cubicle of the gent’s toilets folding raffle tickets ready for the draw. Skittle weekends and jumble sales were the other main fundraisers. The club’s first entry was The Rainmakers. As a theme, it proved relatively successful. On the stage, this new club took fourth place, an unexpected success against the more established clubs. - [Wills Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/wills-carnival-club/): Wills Carnival Club was formed in 1952 by a group of employees from the W&F Wills Ltd engineering works in Bridgwater, and is the most successful tableaux club ever to enter Bridgwater Carnival. In those early days, the management of the company got behind the club and agreed that all interested employees would pay a weekly wage deduction of 1 shilling and sixpence per week to help pay for the club’s entries. - [Vagabonds Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/vagabonds-carnival-club/): The Vagabonds Carnival Club was founded in 1947 by Ken Parsons and Walt Creedy, and the club’s first entry, The Miners, took first place at Bridgwater Carnival. Members originally met at Unity House (the local Labour Party headquarters) for a room rent of one shilling per night. - [Lime Kiln Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/lime-kiln-carnival-club/): If you would like to get involved with the Lime Kiln Carnival Club, then please contact an existing club member, or visit their Facebook or Twitter accounts. - [Cavaliers Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/cavaliers-carnival-club/): Cavaliers Carnival Club are always happy to welcome new members, and can be contacted through their Facebook page. - [Ramblers Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/ramblers-carnival-club/): Ramblers Carnival Club was formed in a moment of madness in 1961 by a band of 10 members. (Namely, Mike Hancock, Terry Milton, Roy Turner, Dave Bennet, Dave Baker, Jessy Howes, Pete Edmonds, Plum Pardoe, Brian Sweeting and Dave Adamson). This membership soon grew and membership now stands at around 40. The club was initially based at the Duke of Monmouth but now has its Headquarters firmly established at the Bunch of Grapes in St John Street. The Ramblers have developed a reputation for being somewhat eccentric if not a little mischievous. Many people would argue that this is the driving force which has maintained the strength of the club over the years through the good and bad times. The  spectacular and mesmerising past entries, both on the stage and on the road, justifiably demonstrates the success the club has enjoyed over the years. - [British Flag Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/british-flag-carnival-club/): British Flag Carnival Club should have celebrated their 70th year in 2020, but with the pandemic putting a stop to that, 2022 is going to be a big year for the club. - [Gremlins Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/gremlins-carnival-club/): Gremlins Carnival Club was formed by ex-members of the Royal Air Force in 1947/8, and produced their first entry in 1949. The club was first known as the R.A.F.A Club (Royal Air Force Association), changing its name to Gremlins CC in 1950. - [Centurion Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/centurion-carnival-club/): The club changed to just Council Carnival Club in the 1970’s due to local people thinking the local council was giving the club money to build and support their winning ways. This was of course untrue, so the decision was made to change the name.Another name change came in 1984 when the club became known as Centurion Carnival Club, and this remains to this day. - [Crusaders Carnival Club](https://www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk/club/crusaders-carnival-club/): In 1977 the club changed their name to the Crusaders Carnival Club and their headquarters to The Three Crowns Pub.
