The Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival 2014 weekend celebrations will start with a bang with a ‘Grand Firework Display’.
Sponsored by Bridgwater Town Council and supported by Sedgemoor District Council for the ninth successive year, the curtain raiser event will take place on Friday 31 October at 7.30pm. The glittering fireworks display has proved popular in the past with spectators and has been well supported by people in and around the Sedgemoor area.
The build up to the fireworks display will start at 3pm, as there will be other attractions at St Matthew’s Field to entertain the family, including a handful of fairground rides, kindly provided by the world famous Chipperfield family.
Local school children from St Mary’s Primary School and Elmwood School will also be getting in on the fun with a special lantern parade before the big display begins. Leading this parade will be a coloured willow effigy of the carnival squibber, made by Somerset Willow Company (pictured under construction), which will be ceremoniously lit at the start of the firework display by Rita Jones, the president of Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.
Bridgwater Mayor, Steve Austen, said: “The carnival celebrations show Bridgwater at its very best, and the Town Council are happy to sponsor the fireworks display once again.
“Carnival attracts many people into the town and brings much business to the economy, and it is an event we are all extremely proud of.”
Dave Stokes, publicity officer for Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, added: “It is terrific news that Bridgwater Town Council is once again sponsoring this year’s fireworks display, and it will get the town in the mood for what is to come the following night.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bridgwater Town Council and Sedgemoor District Council for their continued generosity. If it wasn’t for the help we receive from local authorities, organisations and companies, our carnival would not be as popular as it is.”
There will be a small charge for parking in St Matthew’s Field, with all proceeds raised going towards the Bridgwater Carnival charity.
No unauthorised pedlars will be allowed into the field during the event.
