Interesting Facts

Fact 1 – Distance wise, it is just over 2 miles from the very first entry to the very last entry in the parade, and it will take 2 hours to pass any one viewing point.

Fact 2 – Over 300,000 light bulbs will be lighting the skyline as the carts meander around the streets of Bridgwater.

Fact 3 – 18 Megawatts of electricity will be powering the 50 carnival carts taking part in this year’s carnival procession.

Fact 4 – Over 2,000 people are involved with the 117 entries in this year’s event.

Fact 5 – 1092 traffic cones, 176 road traffic signs, 770 crowd control barriers and 50 road closures were set out by six members of the carnival committee in readiness for the 2012 event. The first are laid at 06:30 hours on carnival day, and the last collected at 03:00 hours the following morning.

Fact 6 – 360 collectors were on the streets on carnival night shaking their 500 collection buckets and 250 collection tins.

Fact 7 – Over the last 25 years, nearly 600,000 has been collected at Bridgwater Carnival and shared between local charities and Bridgwater Carnival.

Fact 8 – 1,600 grandstand seats were sold out four weeks in advance with orders coming from Devon, Lancashire, Surrey, Gwent, East Sussex, Hampshire, Derby, Berkshire, West Midlands, Dorset, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Suffolk, Gloucester, Bedfordshire, London, Cornwall, Kent, West Sussex, Pembrokeshire and Cheshire.

Fact 9 – 52 trade stands line the procession route on carnival night.

Fact 10 – 165 people will take part in the squibbing display, 15 minutes after the procession has finished.

Fact 11 – 37 cups and trophies are awarded on carnival night by our 76 judges.

Fact 12 – At least 46 coaches / minibuses attended Bridgwater Carnival 2012.

Fact 13 – 48,000 publicity flyers were sent out to motorway service stations, event attractions and tourist information centres throughout the country.

Fact 14 – 1,035 people are members of the Bridgwater Carnival Facebook group.

Fact 15 – 1,234 people follow Bridgwater Carnival’s Twitter account.

Fact 16 – 119,605 people have visited our official website in the 12 months up to the Monday after the 2012 carnival, viewing 409,061 pages; of those 41,949 viewing 140,936 pages were in the last week.

Fact 17 – 30 companies and organisations were official sponsors of Bridgwater Carnival 2012.

Fact 18 – 900 low energy bulbs light Bridgwater Carnival s official Guy Fawkes cart which traditionally leads the procession.

Fact 19 – In the last 12 years, Gremlins CC have taken the coveted first spot at Bridgwater Carnival on 10 occasions.

Fact 20 – 2012 was the 407th anniversary of The Gunpowder Plot.
