One year on from taking part in Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant, Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival has produced a book detailing how its entry in this prestigious parade was put together.
The 76 page publication ‘Jubilation’ contains hundreds of photographs capturing every moment from the day when first designs were outlined all the way through to the procession on the streets of central London on 5 June 2022.
“We are extremely grateful to members of the Bridgwater Photographic Society who volunteered their services to record, for prosperity, each and every step of the process” explained Project Coordinator Chris Hocking, who also designed and edited the book.
“Their amazing set of photographs needed to be revealed to everyone, not least because it demonstrates the camaraderie of everyone involved and how their skills and talents were put to great use in creating this historic entry – hence the book.
“It also serves to reveal or remind us of all the hours of work which club members spend in creating the spectacular carnival entries which we see on the streets of Somerset every Autumn. Sometimes we take these talents and their dedication for granted.”
The book also includes a handful of photographs taken by BBC Radio Somerset’s Andy Bennett who, as a member of the road crew, was able to film some of the iconic moments of the Jubilation journey. After sifting through hours of footage, Andy produced a special hour-long documentary titled ‘From Parkway to the Palace – The Story of the Jubilee Cart’ which includes recorded interviews with some of the characters involved.
The ‘Jubilation’ book is priced at £10 and is available from the Bridgwater Carnival Centre (open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 1pm). Add £2.25 for postage if ordering online from www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk or by ‘phone 01278 428220.
