A Bridgwater based carnival club is set to launch an innovative and exciting partnership with a local primary school.
British Flag CC has teamed up with Westover Green Community School and hope to develop and encourage pupils to become the club’s members of the future.
The new partnership builds on the work completed by Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee over recent years where local schools have been becoming more involved with Bridgwater Carnival celebrations. These activities have included children’s dance parades, design and build model carnival cart competitions, the decorating of carnival squibs and masks, and a carnival literacy competition, to name just a few.
Over the next year British Flag CC will work closely with the school’s teachers, pupils and their parents, and will include them in many aspects of life in a successful carnival club. Some of the activities planned for the children to get involved with during the next 12 months include: prop / stage set building workshops, fundraising, costume design, cart design, stage performance workshops, and there will be an opportunity for the children to visit the club’s shed just before carnival day and to take part in some of the performance related events.
Laura Nicholson, chairman of British Flag CC, said: “We have built a strong relationship with the school over the past few years through fundraising opportunities and having our club rehearsals at the school, and now with the support of Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee, we are hoping to create a mini version of British Flag CC. I wish we had this kind of relationship with a carnival club when I was at school.”
Dave Stokes, publicity officer for Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, added: “This is a great opportunity for both the carnival club and for the school, and it takes our work with the local education sector to a whole new level”. He continued: “Local school children are the future of Bridgwater Carnival, and engaging children in Bridgwater Carnival activities is absolutely vital in ensuring the town’s carnival tradition continues to survive for many more generations to enjoy.”
The special partnership is being officially launched on Saturday 5 April at Westover Green School when members of British Flag will perform their show from last week’s popular Old Folks Show to the teachers and pupils.
